Tony Lishman

“To share the gift which I have been given to me is a great Joy”.

Tony was born in Durban, on the shores of the wild Indian Ocean. From an early age art fascinated him, resulting in him drawing on any available piece of paper he could get his hands on. Throughout his school years he preferred spending time in the Art room, drawing rather than doing anything academic, much to the ire of his teachers.

As a teenager he was accepted into the Art Studio of George Zwaaf, and for six years he splashed paint on a canvas, concentrated mainly on Still Life studies and Portraiture. Tony left school in Grade ten and enrolled in the Durban Technical School of Art, the College was located at the top end of West Street. After graduating from Art College, he started his career as a package designer with Amalgamated Packaging Industries. The Company transferred him to their East African branch, and apart from the work Tony loved the bush and this is where his love for Wildlife was born. Once his contract ended and on returning to South Africa, Tony entered the world of advertising, working his way up to Senior Art Director of an International Agency. This was a tremendous experience, giving him the opportunity to work with world class photographers, along with television Directors. He was fortunate to win a few international awards along the way.

After thirty years in the Industry, Tony packed away his briefcase and took out his paint brushes and has been painting ever since. He has been fortunate enough to have sold his work in Galleries not only in Durban but also country wide together with the odd international sale.

Today, whilst still enjoy painting Still Life studies and Landscapes, Tony’s emphasis has been on his favourite subject, Wildlife……especially birds
