ARTISTEmil Maehler

Emil was born in Durban, South Africa on 30 April 1984. Emil has Spastic Cerebal Palsy and although physically disabled can walk and has the use of the right side of his body. Due to the spasticity of his facial muscles he is unable to speak. His adversities have certainly made him a more determined person who works hard to achieve his goals. Emil is not deaf but uses sign language and a program called Proloquo2Go to communicate.

Emil is a very sociable young man and is known for his great big smile. He has always shown an interest in sport and has found his way to golf. You will always find him practicing at the driving range. For the past 12 years he has been the Ambassador for SADGA, which is such confidence boost for him.

Whilst still at school Emil showed a keen interest in art. After leaving school his parents enrolled him with the well know Durban artist, Thelma Buzzard. For the past 14 years Emil has attended lessons with Thelma. His passion and enthusiasm till grow. He uses water colour as his medium and has exhibited with the Art Givers Association and Gallery 415. In 2010 friends living in Collioure, France commissioned Emil to paint “The Village of Collioure” Two paintings of Collioure were send to the friends and after making their choice they asked the local gallery to try and sell the other. The painting was sold within a week! In 2010 one of his paintings was chosen to go into the 2011 calendar at the Institute of Disability, University of New Hampshire, USA. In Sept 2014 SADGA took 6 of his painting to their fundraising day in London and all were successfully auctioned.
